medications and symptoms

Our young adult daughter was recently diagnosed with UC. She was prescribed budesonide and mesalamine. The later is suppose to be a temporary steriod to heal and may be off of it in 30 days. Her mood has been very low since after diagnosis. She is in a job and finds it difficult to manage her fatigue and anxiety. She keeps a log of her bowel habits and her symptoms are not severe and started two months before her colonoscopy. She has no need to rush to the bathroom. My question for the forum is about anxiety, fatique and sadness. Have others experienced similar side effects from the steriod or as a condition of the disease?  Have these feeling subsided after awhile, stopping steriod?

Thank you very much for this response. She has very low bowel stress. She goes to the bathroom 2x per day which is usual for her. She has some formed stool. For the most part, she has an excellent diet for this disease that was in place before the diagnosis. She has expressed anxiousness about leaving her recent job and is depressed following her decision to leaving a high stress/toxic environment job, but this coincided with the steriod theapy. We are encouraging her seek therapy and a comprehensive IBD program. I will keep this post updated about her progress, since it seems to be useful to do so.

Hello!

I don't think the change in mood is from the mesalamine, but I'm not expert. I think this change in mood is probably from the diagnosis. Of course, being diagnosed is a rough time as you try to come to terms with it and feelings of anguish aren't uncommon. The anxiety and sadness you're describing is probably from her coming to terms with having a chronic illness.

In regards to the tiredness, do you know if your daughter is having to wake up and use the restrrom during the night? Getting a good night's rest during a flare up can be nearly impossible, and that may be why she's tired. Unfortuantely, the less rest she gets the more anxious she'll probably be.

The new diagnosis can be a rough time for the patient and the patient's family, so it's important to not hesistate to reach out for support. This online forum is a great place, but I would also reccomend getting in touch with a support group in your local area as well as the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation in general.

Best wishes :)
