Wedding/Honeymoon

Thu, October 21, 2010 1:51 PM

Since I was diagnosed in 2006, I have had very frequent flare ups. In this past January, I was down for the count for about a month- my worst flare up to date.

Since then, my doctors have tweaked my medication and I'm (knock on wood) feeling the best I have in years. This has been the longest I have maintained remission since I was diagnosed.

I'm getting married in March, less than six months away. I'm so incredibly scared that I will have a flare up before then.

I'm also scared about my honeymoon. My future husband and I are going on a cruise. I am not so worried about the cruise part, but we are planning some excursions. Does anyone here know if you call a cruise line, will they tell you if the transportation has a restroom? I am worried about a "1 hour bus trip" without a restroom.

Thank you all for your suggestions.

First Congrats on getting married!!!

Second I know what you are feeling. I just got married in July and a month or so before my wedding I got sick, it was not a full blown flair but it was not fun. My husband and I were super worried about what to do for a honeymoon and what would happen if I got sick. The best thing I can tell you is to stay calm, relax, and talk to your doctor. I talked to my Dr. about where we were going for our honeymoon and we had a plan for what to do if I got sick. I would call the cruise line and ask, it never hurts to ask. Also when we were looking at cruises I looked at the insurance because I was told some cover if you have a medical situation and need to leave early or need special medical attention. But most importantly listen to your body, don't push yourself if you need a day to relax take it. Enjoy your wedding and your honeymoon, it is a great time. The best time of my life! it all goes by so fast, just take in as much as you can and enjoy yourself!

First, stop worrying about something that is still months away.  You have enough on your plate right now, getting ready for the wedding, etc.  You don't need the additional stress.

Yes, you'll have no issues on the cruise ship.  Most (but not all) shore excursions build in bathroom time, but (depending on where you're going) you're not likely to encounter a bus with an on-board toilet.  I would certainly talk to the tour office via the cruiseline's phone number or website.  Likewise, you can ask the tour office when on board.

Don't be tempted to sign up for excursions in advance.  Usually, you can find 2 other people on the cruise who will share a taxi or private car with you for much less than the price of the excursion.  That way, you can have some control over when and where you stop.  Because of Crohn's, I book all my excursions online at each port before I ever get on the ship.  It hasn't failed me yet, and all of my guides and drivers have been great.

Congratulations on your marriage!
