Uganda travels

Thu, December 20, 2012 7:29 PM

Hello!

I am new to this community. I am going to be going to Uganda for five weeks in January/February. I was diagnosed with Crohn's in April of this year.  My GI doctor does not think it's a good idea for me to go as I am still having active symptoms, but it is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me. I was wondering if anyone has any tips or preparation suggestions for traveling to underdeveloped countries. Thanks!

Hi there,

I do a lot of work in Africa and I have Crohn's.  I can tell you that Uganda is beautiful and I hope you get to go.

While I am no doctor and you should follow her/his advice first, here are some of my tips for traveling:

1. bring Immodium with you and use it for the plane
2. If possible try to upgrade to a seat (I know it is terribly costly) but good to be close to the bathroom
3. Bring dry food with you (peanut butter, cereal bars) and don't eat anything that has not been cooked
4. Make sure you can contact the US Embassy or somewhere to help you if need be
5. Carry Cipro just in case

I am sure you have thought of all of this so apologies for stating the very obvious.

have a wonderful time if you go!
