I am new to this site, started treatment of Asacol and Pred and I notice that the Asacol is just going right through me. I can see whole pills in my stool and they are not broken apart or dissolved at all. I can cut them open and see the white/gray power inside still. These cant be doing any good for me if they are just sliding right through. Has anyone else had this experience? I see a few posts and some say they see the outside casing of the pill and when I mentioned pooping these right out to my DR, he insisted it was just the casing and I probably did get the medicine inside, but I know better cuz I can cut them open and see the powder inside. I would save some for him and show him in person next visit but I am changing GI Dr's cuz this guy isnt doing much for me. I know there are many other options now and I havent been offered more than Asacol and Pred and cortisone supps., any suggestions? Do any of the other ASA type drugs dissolve easier? Tnx

I was on Asacol and had the same problem once in awhile and then I got switched to Delzicol which is the same medicine but it has a capsule around the pill instead of being coated. It seems to dissolve better.

the same thing happened to me a few months ago. they had found whole pills when i had a colonoscopy. the Asacol was not dissolving and i started to have a flare. they switched my medication and tried a different course of treatment and I am now back in remission! my new medication works great and me and my doctor have discussed a back up plan in case this medication stops working as well. hope this helped!

I to sometimes see whole asacol tablets but I`ve been in remission for 9 years, one thing I do that helps me is I take 2 immodium tablets with my main meal each day, this helps slow down and maybe gives more time for the asacol to disolve.

I had the same thing, but until I was taken off asacol I didn't know that they actually worked pretty well. Now I'm on Apriso which I consider very, very weak and I miss asacol. I am taking double the dose and still spend multiple trips in the morning and sometimes later.

That's not all that uncommon when you are in a really bad flare. I had that happen to me as well multiple times while in the hospital. At that point I had a bm every 2 hrs or so and it was not enough time to dissolve. You need to tell your doctor absolutely ASAP, it's something they need to know about and deal with immediately.
I'm surprised by the other comment that it was necessary to prove it to a doctor. It's right on the instructions with the meds that it's a possibility. I don't know anything about that doctor so take my comment with a grain of salt, but I would wonder how much experience a GE has with Crohns/UC.

I also have the same problem. I have been on Lialda and Asacol and the same happened to me with both. My GI doc didn't believe me until I collected some of the pills for proof. I am now on apriso and the capsules dissolve but still I see the small beads throughout. The Meds don't seem to be working. It seems the prednisone is the only thing holding things together. When I am weaned to a lower level the symptoms return then up goes the prednisone and things level out again. It's very frustrating and I'm sorry I have no answers just know that you are not the only one.
