Humira vs Remicade

Fri, January 06, 2017 2:01 PM

I got diagnosed with Crohn's in November of 2016. For those who have gone through different medications or know someone who has....My doctor wants to take me off of Pentasa to either Humira or Remicade.

Do you have any advice or personal experiences to help me make the best decision on which direction to go?

Thank you!

In terms of efficacy, both medications have been shown to be effective in treating Crohn's disease. However, each person's response to medication can vary, so it's difficult to predict which one will work best for you. Your doctor may recommend one over the other based on your individual medical history and current symptoms. foodle

I started Remicade at the age of 14/15 after a major flare freshman year of high school. It was an absolute miracle drug! It put me into remission almost immediately. Once starting college almost two hours away, I decided to switch to Humira purely for the convenience. I do agree- the Humira injections are painful, but only last a short period of time. The Remicade was painless, but took almost an entire day between infusion and travel time. They are both wonderful though, just depends on your priorities!

I was in the same boat as you 1.5 years ago. Pentasa wasn't working so dr wanted me to try Humira or Remicade. I initially tried Humira because of the convenience. I'm a big baby when it comes to pain and can't stand needles. I found the Humira injections to be very painful and didn't want to continue to take them. I ended up going with Remicade and have been on it for over a year. The pain of the IV and the fact that I only have to go every 6 weeks is much more tolerable to me rather than the shot every 2 weeks. Both medications worked for me though.

Humira was not an option when I began having Remicade infusions 13 years ago and I know I will continue to have them forever. I was recently offered a packet of info and an opportunity to switch but did not want to give myself the injections. I hope whichever you decide on makes a big difference!
