Scared

Hello, so I have been diagnosed with UC since 2017. I currently am in the midst of having a flare. My symptoms went from where it was filling the toliet with blood to where now (3rd day of treatment) it's just showing on the tissue with blood and now I see the blood in the stool. I'm trying to figure out how am I sure if the symptoms are fading and the medicine (enemas) are working? I think the blood has decreased which is a big step. Just kind of panicking, thinking worse case situation, cancer. I'm just freaking out. Any advice or comments would help calm me down. Thanks! :)

UC is a disease where active symptoms can come (flare) and go (remission).   Sometimes it can help to track your symptoms.  Use a Symptom Tracker http://www.crohnscolitisfoundation.org/assets/pdfs/ibd-symptom-tracker.pdf
For example blood in the toilet may look like a lot, but it might be decreasing.   It might help to blot, rather than wipe to see how much blood there may be. Then look to see if the blot the size of a quarter or the size of a baseball?  Use moist wipes as too much wiping could cause irritation.  Share this information with your doctor who can help you understand your symptoms.

Check out a brochure called Managing Flares and other IBD Symptoms to learn more about what you can expect http://www.crohnscolitisfoundation.org/assets/pdfs/Managing-flares.pdf with living with UC.
Learning more about UC can help educate you and hopefully reduce your panic.   If you just want to talk call the IBD Help Center at 888 (MY GUT PAIN) 694-8872 (M-F 9:00 -5:00 pm ET).

You might want to get your blood levels checked.  I had perpetual diarrhea and didn’t realize I was passing blood as well. I had bloodwork done for another issue and was told to go to the hospital. They gave me five pints of blood, and twenty three eventually.
